//* Hike! *//

Went for a short night hike yesterday. The group: Benny (the organiser) & friends - one naval diver still serving NS, the diver's elder brother and Delton who led the way; Adrian with wife; Kin Woon; Angeline; Meng Ger; Hazel & friends - Maggie, who's an advanced diver, & Hannah. Start point is MacRitchie Reservoir near Little Sisters Of The Poor. I brought my DC and so we took a group picture there before setting off into the vegetation at around 7.30pm. We took the Forest Trail and ventured into Singapore's Nature Reserve. There was rain earlier in the day and so we were blessed with cool weather, and with a full moon, we were never walking in total darkness. Along the way, Kin Woon was keeping count of the number of benches we passed, while Meng Ger was arranging for the program after the hike - midnight show "Black Water". After about an hour, we came out of the trail onto the perimeter of a golf course - "civilisation" was what Adrian termed it. We took a break outside the gate of a PUB facility to drink and towel before skirting around it and then walking into the trees again - this time heading towards our end point. The route, commonly known as the PUB line because of the water pipes that runs under it from the reservoirs, was now a little uneven, consisting of a series of small humps that we had to negotiate. We reached Rifle Range Road, the end point of the hike and where the cars were parked, at around 9.45pm. Benny took out a map and showed us the route we have taken for the hike while we rested. We left shortly after for supper at a McDonald's nearby. For me, I have quite enjoyed the hike, and I'd love to do it again. Benny mentioned that we will take the tougher Diary Farm route next time. Count me in.

//* New SNEs *//

3 new SNEs added at BrownTown, at long last!
//* Overnight OT *//

Tonight while most people are sound asleep, I will be going back to office at 4am to work! Had to do some mass data updates when the server is down for backup and maintenence in the early morning hours. So I better go get some sleep now. :)

//* Fail! *//

I didn't pass my driving test. :(( I actually left for the test centre early, hoping to get a cup of coffee to calm my nerves. That plan was wrecked when it started to rain cats and dogs before I alighted from the bus, and I was trapped at the bus stop for a very long time. In the end, I had to call my instructor to fetch me in. I guess that was already a bad omen. I began to worry about the slippery road condition and became more nervous. Then I saw my examiner and things couldn't really be any worse. His face was so dark and stern and his voice was so low and fearsome. During the entire duration of the test, he never for once smiled. Apparently, luck deserted me. In the end, I was too careful and tried too hard not to make mistakes. I failed because I was too slow moving off and drove too slowly on the road. "That's not the way to drive. Try again next time." I was disappointed for quite a while. *sigh*

//* Thinking of a new layout...*//

I'm almost done with the preparations to move. Only the archives section needs to be tweaked, I think. But now, I am thinking of doing a new layout. I need a new banner anyway, now that the blogspot ad banner is going to be out of the way. So now, if you have suggestions for a new layout, I want to hear it. Ok? Hmmm...maybe I'll learn how to use Flash MX to create some flash for the new layout...hehe. :)))

//* Dear Diary... *//

I had a pretty good time Friday afternoon at the off-site meeting at East Coast Pasta Fresca. Every department took turns to talk about our goals and the inhibitors to achieving those goals. There were open discussions of problems faced by each department while working with other departments. It was probably not so much that we need to find solutions. But rather that we were able to improve mutual understanding of perspectives that was really beneficial. Of course, we had a lot of food and drinks. The sea view was fantastic and the afternoon breeze, too.

Later, I went to Rachel's place at Bendemeer for dinner. Steve, Ivy, Collin and Rose were already there. Imelda arrived a little while after me. I like the amount of space she has in her flat. It feels so spacious. After finishing dinner, we just sat at her sofa and watched Channel U. It was so relaxing. We took some champagne and chit-chat. I think I am very fortunate to have this group of friends. It is a nice feeling to be able to meet up once in a while and share happenings and feelings. Thank you, my friends!

I am now making preparations for the move to exsyn.com according to instructions at Blogger FAQ. I have also setup a new email address - sbkoh at exsyn.com. Please use it. ;)))

It was an eventful enough day. My company has just turned in our first profitable quarter for almost 2 years. So it was smiles all round when the CEO addressed us in the morning. Great way to start the day! Lunch was also special in a way - it was taken with Andrea, Benny and Hasnia, sitting at the benches outside Fitness Network, with people passing us by every minute! Benny invited me to go for a group night-hiking at MacRitchie next week. I think I will have fun. :)) In the afternoon, Jon's team finally deployed the programs for EK project. We have to - the service goes live tomorrow. I gave each of them 3 days' off each. They have worked overnight on the last weekend to meet the deadline. So they deserve it.

Tomorrow, there's an off-site chill-out with HODs at East Coast in the afternoon. Dress code is T-shirt and shorts and there will be beer. I think I will wear bermudas and bring my DC along. Dinner will be at Rachel's place at her invitation. There will be beer, wine and Jack Daniel's. Not sure if we are going to cheong after dinner. By then, I could be too drunk already!

Looks like I will probably only be able to work on exsyn.com from Saturday.

//* Happenings *//

Has not been posting frequently the last week. So what's been happening, you ask?

Quite a bit :
Firstly, there is Iambic's apology over registering datebk4.com and datebk5.com.
And after procrastinating for almost a whole week, I finally dragged myself to go for some jogging Friday evening. I don't think I am ever going to get rid of my "spare tyres". *sigh*
Last evening, I went into the Ubi Driving Circuit for the first time. Before my actual driving test next Thursday, I will have to drive in the circuit 2 or 3 more times. Mr Loke seems not too worried about me. So I am somewhat confident of passing. I am just afraid that I will be too nervous on the day and screw up. :p
I may be going to SLS later to buy a new harddisk. The IBM 20GB in the PC is having more and more bad sectors; I think there is almost 2MB of bad sectors in there now. :(( Considering getting an IBM 120GXP or Seagate Barracuda ATA-IV. It's shopping time!

Update: If you happened to be interested, I got the IBM 120GXP 40GB. :p

//* How To Stay Young, Happy & Healthy *//

Throw out non-essential numbers.
This includes age, weight and height.
Let the doctor worry about them.
That is why you pay him/her.

Keep only cheerful friends.
The grouches pull you down.
If you really need a grouch, there are probably a few dozen of your
relatives to do the job.

Keep learning.
Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening ...whatever.
Just never let the brain idle.

Enjoy the simple things.
When the children are young...
that is all that you can afford.
When they are in college...
that is all that you can afford.
When they are grown and you are on retirement...
that is all that you can afford!

Laugh often, long and loud.
Laugh until you gasp for breath.
Laugh so much that you can be tracked in the store by your distinctive
laughter.

The tears happen.
Endure, grieve, and move on.
The only person who is with us our entire life is ... ourselves.

Surround yourself with what you love, whether it is family, pets,
keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies ... whatever.
Your home is your refuge.

Cherish your health.
If it is good ... preserve it.
If it is unstable ... improve it.
If it is beyond what you can improve ... get help.

Don't take guilt trips.
Go to the mall, the next county, a foreign country... but not guilt.

Tell the people you love,
that you love them ...
at every opportunity.

Remember ...
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take,
but by the moments that take our breath away.

//* Palm news *//

Firstly, Singapore's Palm User Group (SPUG) has lost the spug.org domain name to a cybersquatter when the domain name was not promptly renewed upon expiry. :((( Tough, but fortunately, SPUG has another domain name, spug.net, at which the SPUG website nows runs on. Given that there is really nothing much that can be done to get back the spug.org domain name immediately, the SPUG community is now trying to divert traffic away from spug.org to spug.net to deny the cybersquatter any benefits he expects to derive from taking over the domain name. So remember, SPUG is now at http://www.spug.net.

Pimlico Software has released DateBk5, the new version of its very popular replacement of Palm's Datebook application, DateBk4. DateBk4 was one of the first few Palm applications I actually bought, and it is the most frequently used application on my Palm m505. You can say I can't live without this fantastic piece of software!

Last, but not least, LauncherX has updated the sneak peek of its up and coming sleek successor to Launcher III, an immensely popular application launcher for Palm. It's so cool that I want it like NOW! :))

Oh, by the way, what I am holding in my palm in the webcam pic is, of course, my m505. :p

//* www.*synthesis.com *//

Yeh, I have finally thought of a name! Ok, not quite yet, but at least a substantial part of it. :) I have decided my domain name will be *synthesis.com, where * is another word I have not decided. So what do you think? I was thinking of the following options: blogsynthesis, thoughtsynthesis, lovesynthesis, heartsynthesis, friendsynthesis, starsynthesis, etc. So tell me which one sounds best, or better still, suggest new ones. All ideas, however radical, are welcomed!

//* Singapore River, a thunderstorm & a 64MB CF *//

Took some pictures at the Singapore River this afternoon. Actually ran out of space in the CF card by the time I crossed Cavenagh Bridge, but it was just as well because it started to rain. Luckily I managed to reach the Coffee Bean outlet at the other end of Boat Quay before it became a thunderstorm. There was nothing else to do except to sit facing the river and enjoy a glass of latte while waiting for the rain to stop. By the river bank, there were some tables with umbrellas and there were three girls enjoying themselves taking pictures of one another. Behind me, this nice-looking girl accidentally spilled her glass of coffee. It took about 20 minutes for the rain to subside. I decided I needed more than the 8MB CF card in the camera; so when I found a shop at Funan selling a 64MB Sandisk CF for $60, it's mine.

//* Help with domain name *//

I'm certain I want to move out of Blogspot to DifferentHost and get a domain name now. But I'm really stuck at choosing the domain name. So I am opening it up to the regular visitors here (and there aren't many of you) to think of a domain name for me. Since I can have sub-domains, I thought I will be able to host your blogs under the same domain as well - complimentary, of course. So it is like choosing a domain name for yourself also. So start thinking and please give me your ideas, ok?

//* YACCS code upgrade *//

If you are using YACCS, you have to upgrade to a new YACCS code. I upgraded this morning. I'm also customising the comments template so that it has the same look and feel as my main page.
//* World Cup sites *//

If you don't know the event of the year is the World Cup, where have you been?? Soccernet has just launched their own World Cup site. Check it out!

//* No SPUG *//

SPUG is now totally down! We were able to use spug.net address in place of spug.org over the last few days. But now, even www.spug.net is also inaccessible. :(
