//* Movable...*//

It's like I get bored too easily and always need to try out something new to sustain myself. So I am looking at Movable Type (MT) and getting tempted to make the move.

So Channel 8 is showing Meteor Garden and my sister is following the series even though we already have the entire 19 episodes on VCD and she has watched the whole series like twice already. :p

//* No new layout *//

Yep, I'm giving up on a totally new layout for now. Why? Because I don't really know how I want it to be and it is going to take too much time. I might still be making some minor changes, though. This means I should be able to move this blog to its new home within the week...yeah!! :))

//* Hike! *//

Went for a short night hike yesterday. The group: Benny (the organiser) & friends - one naval diver still serving NS, the diver's elder brother and Delton who led the way; Adrian with wife; Kin Woon; Angeline; Meng Ger; Hazel & friends - Maggie, who's an advanced diver, & Hannah. Start point is MacRitchie Reservoir near Little Sisters Of The Poor. I brought my DC and so we took a group picture there before setting off into the vegetation at around 7.30pm. We took the Forest Trail and ventured into Singapore's Nature Reserve. There was rain earlier in the day and so we were blessed with cool weather, and with a full moon, we were never walking in total darkness. Along the way, Kin Woon was keeping count of the number of benches we passed, while Meng Ger was arranging for the program after the hike - midnight show "Black Water". After about an hour, we came out of the trail onto the perimeter of a golf course - "civilisation" was what Adrian termed it. We took a break outside the gate of a PUB facility to drink and towel before skirting around it and then walking into the trees again - this time heading towards our end point. The route, commonly known as the PUB line because of the water pipes that runs under it from the reservoirs, was now a little uneven, consisting of a series of small humps that we had to negotiate. We reached Rifle Range Road, the end point of the hike and where the cars were parked, at around 9.45pm. Benny took out a map and showed us the route we have taken for the hike while we rested. We left shortly after for supper at a McDonald's nearby. For me, I have quite enjoyed the hike, and I'd love to do it again. Benny mentioned that we will take the tougher Diary Farm route next time. Count me in.

//* New SNEs *//

3 new SNEs added at BrownTown, at long last!
//* Overnight OT *//

Tonight while most people are sound asleep, I will be going back to office at 4am to work! Had to do some mass data updates when the server is down for backup and maintenence in the early morning hours. So I better go get some sleep now. :)

//* Fail! *//

I didn't pass my driving test. :(( I actually left for the test centre early, hoping to get a cup of coffee to calm my nerves. That plan was wrecked when it started to rain cats and dogs before I alighted from the bus, and I was trapped at the bus stop for a very long time. In the end, I had to call my instructor to fetch me in. I guess that was already a bad omen. I began to worry about the slippery road condition and became more nervous. Then I saw my examiner and things couldn't really be any worse. His face was so dark and stern and his voice was so low and fearsome. During the entire duration of the test, he never for once smiled. Apparently, luck deserted me. In the end, I was too careful and tried too hard not to make mistakes. I failed because I was too slow moving off and drove too slowly on the road. "That's not the way to drive. Try again next time." I was disappointed for quite a while. *sigh*

//* Thinking of a new layout...*//

I'm almost done with the preparations to move. Only the archives section needs to be tweaked, I think. But now, I am thinking of doing a new layout. I need a new banner anyway, now that the blogspot ad banner is going to be out of the way. So now, if you have suggestions for a new layout, I want to hear it. Ok? Hmmm...maybe I'll learn how to use Flash MX to create some flash for the new layout...hehe. :)))

//* Dear Diary... *//

I had a pretty good time Friday afternoon at the off-site meeting at East Coast Pasta Fresca. Every department took turns to talk about our goals and the inhibitors to achieving those goals. There were open discussions of problems faced by each department while working with other departments. It was probably not so much that we need to find solutions. But rather that we were able to improve mutual understanding of perspectives that was really beneficial. Of course, we had a lot of food and drinks. The sea view was fantastic and the afternoon breeze, too.

Later, I went to Rachel's place at Bendemeer for dinner. Steve, Ivy, Collin and Rose were already there. Imelda arrived a little while after me. I like the amount of space she has in her flat. It feels so spacious. After finishing dinner, we just sat at her sofa and watched Channel U. It was so relaxing. We took some champagne and chit-chat. I think I am very fortunate to have this group of friends. It is a nice feeling to be able to meet up once in a while and share happenings and feelings. Thank you, my friends!

I am now making preparations for the move to exsyn.com according to instructions at Blogger FAQ. I have also setup a new email address - sbkoh at exsyn.com. Please use it. ;)))

Thursday, May 16, 2002

It was an eventful enough day. My company has just turned in our first profitable quarter for almost 2 years. So it was smiles all round when the CEO addressed us in the morning. Great way to start the day! Lunch was also special in a way - it was taken with Andrea, Benny and Hasnia, sitting at the benches outside Fitness Network, with people passing us by every minute! Benny invited me to go for a group night-hiking at MacRitchie next week. I think I will have fun. :)) In the afternoon, Jon's team finally deployed the programs for EK project. We have to - the service goes live tomorrow. I gave each of them 3 days' off each. They have worked overnight on the last weekend to meet the deadline. So they deserve it.

Tomorrow, there's an off-site chill-out with HODs at East Coast in the afternoon. Dress code is T-shirt and shorts and there will be beer. I think I will wear bermudas and bring my DC along. Dinner will be at Rachel's place at her invitation. There will be beer, wine and Jack Daniel's. Not sure if we are going to cheong after dinner. By then, I could be too drunk already!

Looks like I will probably only be able to work on exsyn.com from Saturday.

//* Happenings *//

Has not been posting frequently the last week. So what's been happening, you ask?

Quite a bit :
Firstly, there is Iambic's apology over registering datebk4.com and datebk5.com.
And after procrastinating for almost a whole week, I finally dragged myself to go for some jogging Friday evening. I don't think I am ever going to get rid of my "spare tyres". *sigh*
Last evening, I went into the Ubi Driving Circuit for the first time. Before my actual driving test next Thursday, I will have to drive in the circuit 2 or 3 more times. Mr Loke seems not too worried about me. So I am somewhat confident of passing. I am just afraid that I will be too nervous on the day and screw up. :p
I may be going to SLS later to buy a new harddisk. The IBM 20GB in the PC is having more and more bad sectors; I think there is almost 2MB of bad sectors in there now. :(( Considering getting an IBM 120GXP or Seagate Barracuda ATA-IV. It's shopping time!

Update: If you happened to be interested, I got the IBM 120GXP 40GB. :p

//* How To Stay Young, Happy & Healthy *//

Throw out non-essential numbers.
This includes age, weight and height.
Let the doctor worry about them.
That is why you pay him/her.

Keep only cheerful friends.
The grouches pull you down.
If you really need a grouch, there are probably a few dozen of your
relatives to do the job.

Keep learning.
Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening ...whatever.
Just never let the brain idle.

Enjoy the simple things.
When the children are young...
that is all that you can afford.
When they are in college...
that is all that you can afford.
When they are grown and you are on retirement...
that is all that you can afford!

Laugh often, long and loud.
Laugh until you gasp for breath.
Laugh so much that you can be tracked in the store by your distinctive
laughter.

The tears happen.
Endure, grieve, and move on.
The only person who is with us our entire life is ... ourselves.

Surround yourself with what you love, whether it is family, pets,
keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies ... whatever.
Your home is your refuge.

Cherish your health.
If it is good ... preserve it.
If it is unstable ... improve it.
If it is beyond what you can improve ... get help.

Don't take guilt trips.
Go to the mall, the next county, a foreign country... but not guilt.

Tell the people you love,
that you love them ...
at every opportunity.

Remember ...
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take,
but by the moments that take our breath away.

//* Palm news *//

Firstly, Singapore's Palm User Group (SPUG) has lost the spug.org domain name to a cybersquatter when the domain name was not promptly renewed upon expiry. :((( Tough, but fortunately, SPUG has another domain name, spug.net, at which the SPUG website nows runs on. Given that there is really nothing much that can be done to get back the spug.org domain name immediately, the SPUG community is now trying to divert traffic away from spug.org to spug.net to deny the cybersquatter any benefits he expects to derive from taking over the domain name. So remember, SPUG is now at http://www.spug.net.

Pimlico Software has released DateBk5, the new version of its very popular replacement of Palm's Datebook application, DateBk4. DateBk4 was one of the first few Palm applications I actually bought, and it is the most frequently used application on my Palm m505. You can say I can't live without this fantastic piece of software!

Last, but not least, LauncherX has updated the sneak peek of its up and coming sleek successor to Launcher III, an immensely popular application launcher for Palm. It's so cool that I want it like NOW! :))

Oh, by the way, what I am holding in my palm in the webcam pic is, of course, my m505. :p

//* www.*synthesis.com *//

Yeh, I have finally thought of a name! Ok, not quite yet, but at least a substantial part of it. :) I have decided my domain name will be *synthesis.com, where * is another word I have not decided. So what do you think? I was thinking of the following options: blogsynthesis, thoughtsynthesis, lovesynthesis, heartsynthesis, friendsynthesis, starsynthesis, etc. So tell me which one sounds best, or better still, suggest new ones. All ideas, however radical, are welcomed!

//* Singapore River, a thunderstorm & a 64MB CF *//

Took some pictures at the Singapore River this afternoon. Actually ran out of space in the CF card by the time I crossed Cavenagh Bridge, but it was just as well because it started to rain. Luckily I managed to reach the Coffee Bean outlet at the other end of Boat Quay before it became a thunderstorm. There was nothing else to do except to sit facing the river and enjoy a glass of latte while waiting for the rain to stop. By the river bank, there were some tables with umbrellas and there were three girls enjoying themselves taking pictures of one another. Behind me, this nice-looking girl accidentally spilled her glass of coffee. It took about 20 minutes for the rain to subside. I decided I needed more than the 8MB CF card in the camera; so when I found a shop at Funan selling a 64MB Sandisk CF for $60, it's mine.

//* Help with domain name *//

I'm certain I want to move out of Blogspot to DifferentHost and get a domain name now. But I'm really stuck at choosing the domain name. So I am opening it up to the regular visitors here (and there aren't many of you) to think of a domain name for me. Since I can have sub-domains, I thought I will be able to host your blogs under the same domain as well - complimentary, of course. So it is like choosing a domain name for yourself also. So start thinking and please give me your ideas, ok?

//* Busy-ness *//

I have been kept so occupied that I have not posted for a few days. There's been an air of busy-ness in the office, but there are now more face-to-face smiles than arguments over email. The inter-team workflow has evolved over the past few months and everyone has more or less adapted to it. Those involved in the EK project are bonding quite nicely to meet the brought forward deadline. At least now, I won't be feeling a sense of dread going back to office on Monday. :)

Tuesday, April 23, 2002

Still remember I mentioned about getting my friend a belated birthday present? After procrastinating for so long, finally shopped with her at Isetan Scotts after work just now and bought her a handbag she chose. She said she will carry it to work tomorrow. Also treated her to dinner at Sushi Teh. Had wanted to go to Sakae Sushi, but she insisted on walking down to Paragon for Sushi Teh. I obliged her, of course. Well, it's for her birthday, isn't it? :)

//* Didn't do much *//

In the end we didn't do much. There was some mis-communication such that Steve, Collin and me went to HMV only to realise that Rose was unaware of the meeting place. So we went to meet her up at Clarke Quay instead. Rachel and Imelda did not make it. So the four of us have our makan at Hong Kong Street in Clarke Quay. Rose talked about her staff, her bosses, etc. She is working at Virgin Mobile and apparently, it is a cool, fun place to work - I'm so envious. :) We adjourned to a nearby pub after dinner. We ordered some housepour, and continued chatting, taking a few pictures with the DC I have brought along in the process. We left about finishing the three jugs. I reached home at about midnight after sending Rose back to her flat at Serangoon North in a cab. It has been a tiring day, and the quiet evening of food and drinks has probably been better than a wild night at Mohd Sultan.

Sunday, April 14, 2002

Saw someone during lunch just now - a friend from my NUS days. I couldn't recall her name and so didn't dare to say hello. I have a feeling that she recognises me, too, but she probably couldn't remember where and when we met. She was my junior at NUS and we were in the Graduation Ball committee. I have volunteered to make a video to commemorate our graduation. I didn't have a video cam and so I borrowed hers. I still vaguely remember the times when we were shooting around campus and then editing the footage together. I had feelings for her, but there was nothing more. It was a very short period of time and we never meet again after I graduated, that is, until today. I hope she's doing well. Hopefully I'll see her again and have the courage to say hello.

I remember her name now - Pearl.

//* Ice Age *//

Went to watch Ice Age with Alex & Trevor. Actually wanted to catch A Beautiful Mind, but it was not showing at Tiong Bahru. I have not watched a movie for a long time. The last one was Monsters, Inc and the one before that was Shrek! Don't get me wrong - I'm not a hardcore fan of animation movies, it's just coincidence. Ice Age is not really that nice a show. I still like Shrek and Monsters, Inc much better than this one.

//* Insured *//

I am looking at the referral form and wondering whose name and phone number I should put. I have promised Rosanna to fax her the form in the afternoon. But I have left the form at home, and anyway, I don't know who I can refer to her. I dread having to give friend's phone numbers to insurance agents, although as my agents, they have served me well. I have actually invested quite a bit into insurance policies since I started working. I think I have about 10 policies now! A number of them are mainly investment plans though. So I suppose you can say I'm making my money work really hard. :)

//* Rain *//

Someone up there must have heard me, cos I woke up this morning to sounds of thunder and before long, it began to pour heavily. Yahoo!! I was so delighted that I even took some pictures of the rain from the kitchen window. Hurrays to the rain for driving away the heat that has been so overwhelming over the last few days!
//* Hot! Hot! Hot! *//

Arrghh! I'm having a headache... probably because the weather is so hot! It's so warm that I can sweat all over even if I just sit still. The hot season is back again and it is getting on my nerves...

Have to go and shop for a pair of golf shoes as a belated birthday present this weekend. I know there are a number of golf shops around town. But I don't play golf myself. So I don't know what's best and, worse, may even get conned by the shops. Maybe I'll call James...he plays golf.

//* Exercise not enough *//

It began to pour heavily in the afternoon, and I thought my plan for a jog in the evening is wrecked. But the rain actually stopped and my excuse was gone. So at half past six, I dragged myself to the gym to change. After a downpour, the weather is cool and the air is refreshing - perfect conditions for some exercise. I duly completed my rounds and head back home. I wish I have the discipline to do this 2 to 3 times a week - my tummy is becoming more and more unsightly!! :-(

//* Webcam!! *//

Webcam is up!! The "webcam" is actually my Canon DC. I have been looking high and low for applications that will allow me to use it as a webcam. I was almost giving it up when, lo and behold, I chanced upon Cam4you! It's simply the best utility for my DC, and its remote control feature means that I can now take automatic shots at regular intervals. What is left is to find an ftp client that will upload my webcam pic automatically as well. This I found in FTP Control. After hours of tweaking, the setup is finally complete!

//* A day in the life of ... *//

I had not intended to go down to the roadshow. But Leon called early in the morning to say that POS could not print and want someone to go down to fix it. Jon's handphone was getting directed to his voicemail. So I had to make the trip. When Leon called later to say he has fixed the problem himself, I have already told mum I am going out for lunch. So I went anyway, taking my DC along.

All the marketing people were there, of course. And I began snapping pictures. The crowd was slowly building up. Caught Andrea on candid camera as she walks by. Her order was to, of course, erase the shot. The shot is still, now, in the CF...hehe. After a while, I went off and walked into Carrefour where I bought the GP PowerBank. I need to get rechargeables for the DC that is comsuming alkaline batteries like nobody's business. I got back in time to see Fandi on stage and Elena among the crowd. It was about one past when I bid Andrea goodbye and then lunched at Delifrance. I like Delifrance sandwiches although I regretted ordering the soup. :-(

At home, XP could not start and I spent like 2 hours recovering from the corrupted registry problem. And that's one eventful day in the life of a nerdy blogger from Singapore...:p

//* Liverpool 1 - 0 Chelsea *//

Maybe it is because Liverpool has just luckily won against Chelsea and is now top of the English Premier League - it is 1.30am and I am still not feeling sleepy...hehe! As the commentator of the game said, to win the championship, you must win games you don't deserve to win. A massive win for Liverpool...yeah!!

//* Packed *//

First, Mr Loke called to bring forward the driving lesson to 11.10am. Then Robert called to meet up for a dinner gathering at 6pm. This means I can bring forward my facial appointment to 2 o'clock, after which I can have my hair cut at City Slick earlier and be at City Hall MRT punctually at six. I was home the whole day yesterday with nothing to do, but today, when I have had everything pre-planned, someone's re-arranging my schedule nicely for me. Not that I am particular, just thought it's kind of coincidental.

Kee Dong, Philippe and me at Fatty's

Well, I made the trip up Kent Ridge Park and took some pictures. But the pictures are not well taken. Quite disappointed. Had a delicious lunch at Burlington Square though. //* Tranquillity *//

Went for a little jog at Kent Ridge Park just now. My office is right at the end of Science Park and Kent Ridge Park is just right behind my office block. It has been a while since I last went for a jog there, so it was great to experience the tranquillity of the park once more. I will bring my DC with me to do a photo shoot next time, maybe on Wednesday.

//* Hangover Saturday *//

Went for dinner and then drinks at Samsara yesterday evening with Ed, Werner, Ah Sui, William and Clifford. It has been a while since we last got together. Ah Sui has left PI and is now at M1. With Ed being at Starhub and William at SingTel, much of the conversation and jokes at dinner centred around the trio in relation to the telco they each represent. We adjourned to Samsara at Mohd Sultan after making a wasted trip to Roar - it has turned into a Canto pub 8 days earlier. There was no crowd at Samsara, but the music was pretty good. We opened a bottle of Remy Silver and after a few rounds of five-ten, I had taken quite a few glasses and was feeling high. I easily threw up a little while later. Ah Sui suggested that I may have taken too little food for dinner. I got home at three in the morning and hopped into bed without showering. Needless to say, I woke up with a blistering headache and struggled with the hangover for the most part of Saturday today!

A friend sent me this heart-wrenching and tear-jerking story today...

"On the last day before Christmas, i hurried to go to the supermarket to buy the remaining of the gift i didnt manage to buy earlier. When i saw all the people there, i started to complain to myself:

'It is going to take forever here and i still have so many other place to go...'

'Christmas really is getting more and more annoying every year. How i wish i could just lie down, go to sleep and only wake up after it...'

Nonetheless, i made my way to the toy section, and there i started to curse the prices, wondering if afterall kids really play with such expensive toys. While looking in the toy section, i noticed a small boy of about 7 years old, pressing a doll against his chest. He kept on touching the hair of the doll and looked so sad. I wondered who was this doll for. Then the little boy turned to the old woman next to him:

'Granny, are you sure i dont have enough money?'

The old lady replied: 'You know it that you dont have enough money to buy this doll, my dear.'

Then she asked him to stay here for 5 minutes while she went to look around. She left quickly. The little boy was still holding the doll in his hand.

Finally, i started to walk toward him and i asked him who did he want to give this doll to.

'It is the doll that my sister loved most and wanted so much for this Christmas. She was so sure that Santa Clauss would bring it to her.'

I replied to him that maybe Santa Clauss will bring it to her, afterall, and not to worry. But he replied to me sadly.

'No, Santa Clauss can not bring it to her where she is now. I have to give the doll to my mother so that she can give it to her when she goes there.'

His eyes were so sad while saying this.

'My sister has gone to be with God. Daddy say that Mummy will also go to see God very soon, so i thought that she could bring the doll with her to give it to my sister'

My heart nearly stopped.The little boy looked up at me and said:

'I told daddy to tell mummy not to go yet. I asked him to wait until i come back from the supermarket'

Then he showed me a very nice photo of him where he was laughing. He then told me:

'I also want mummy to take this photo with her so that she will not forget me.'

'I love my mummy and i wish she doesnt have to leave me but daddy says that she has to go to be with my little sister'

Then he looked again at the doll with sad eyes, very quietly. I quickly reached for my wallet and took a few notes and said to the boy.

'What if we checked again, just in case if u have enough money?'

'Ok' he said. 'I hope that i have enough.'

I added some of my money to his without him seeing and we started to count it. There was enough for the doll, and even some spare money. The little boy said:

'Thank you God for giving me enough money'

Then he looked at me and added:

'I asked yesterday before i slept for God to make sure i have enough money to buy this doll so that mummy can give it to my sister. He heard me'

'I also wanted to have enough money to buy a white rose for my mummy, but i didnt dare to ask God too much. But He gave me enough to buy the doll and the white rose.'

'You know, my mummy loves white rose'

A few minutes later, the old lady came again and i left with my trolley.

I finished my shopping in a totally different state from when i started. I couldnt get the little boy out of my mind. Then i remembered a local newspaper article 2 days ago, which mentioned of a drunk man in a truck who hit pathway where there was one young lady and a little girl walking. The little girl died right away, and the mother was left in a critical state. The family had to decide whether to pull the plug on the life-assisting machine, because the young lady would not be able to get out of the coma. Was this the family of the little boy?

Two days after this encounter with the little boy, i read in the newspaper that the young lady had passed away. I couldnt stop myself and went to buy a bunch of white roses and i went to the mortuary where the body of the young woman was exposed for people to see and make last wish before burial. She was there, in her coffin, holding a beautiful white rose in her hand with the photo of the little boy and the doll placed over her chest.I left the place crying, feeling that my life had been changed forever. The love that this little boy had for his mother and his sister is still, to that day, hard to imagine.

And in a fraction of a second, a drunk man had taken all this away from him."

//* Classic Quote *//

Every now and then it takes a true military mind to come up with a classic quote!......

In a recent interview, General Norman Schwartzkopf was asked if he thought there was room for forgiveness toward the people who have harboured and abetted the terrorists who perpetrated the 9/11 attacks on America.

His answer:

"I believe that forgiving them is God's function.
Our job is simply to arrange the meeting"
//* Music Diary *//

On the same day I bought the Canon A10, I also spent some money on a pocket FM stereo. And so I have been listening to radio on the way to work and on the way back. There is this program that I have grown to like very much. It is called Music Diary. On the program, the DJ LingZhi would read out letters from young listeners who reflect on their relationships - how it started, the joy when the relationship progressed and, most of the time, the despair and desperation when it ended, and, not least of all, the impact it has made on each of their lives. The stories often touch me, probably because they are real life experiences that I can relate to. The program has become my best companion on the ride home everyday. The program airs every weekday from 8.00pm to 8.30pm on YES 93.3FM.

//* Long time no see... *//

Met someone I haven't see for a long time yesterday. Was pleasantly surprised when I saw her in the office. I couldn't remember her name although Ivy remembers mine. Had known her as a colleague back when I started working after graduation in 1995. And she is now a colleague again, albeit in different business units. There were actually a bunch of us - Wynthia, Emily, Dennis, George, Ivy, and a few others I can't remember their names. I have lost contact with all of them now. So it is a nice feeling to see her again after so long. I wonder how the rest are doing now.

//* Make a wish *//

I finally finished the last 3 episodes of Meteor Gardens (Liu Xing Hua Yuan). Ah Si's mother finally admits defeat and flew back to New York quietly, leaving her son to be together with San Cai. And San Cai finally says "I Love You" to Ah Si and they are happily together until...well, until the show producers make the sequel...hehe. I like romantic love stories a lot, probably because I am hungry for love myself. So on this 1st day of my 31st year on Earth, I make a wish that this year, I will find a girl to love wholeheartedly, to protect and to share my joy and woes.

//* Palm m515 !! *//

A small upgrade from m505 but a drool nonetheless.
//* Airport emotions *//

The airport is where you see the basic human emotions - the joy of welcoming the return of a loved one, the sadness of the departure of someone you love, and last, but not least, the fanatic emotions of teenage girls trying to get the attention of their handsome idol(s) preparing to fly back home. Here are the photos I took at the new Changi Airport MRT station. No, there are no pictures of the fans nor their idol, a Taiwanese pop group called WeWe (pronounced Wee-Wee).

Just got back from driving lesson. After lunch, I am going to do my first photo shoot. Still deciding on where to go - Botanic Gardens or Airport MRT or Marina South or ...??
//* Panic! *//

Suddenly, the thought that in less than two days I will turn 31 makes me panic. The scary part is that I see friends and colleagues with their bf/gf/husband/wife happily attached, but here I am still all by myself. I have got to do something...but what should I do??

//* Long long meeting... *//

Today's weekly department meeting is the longest ever. Everyone was given a chance to voice out problems faced in carrying out our work and suggest solutions. By the time the last person, that's me, finished, it's already 3pm! Lunch was delicious though, thanks to Alex and Li Jiuen. But, too bad I only took one round of the food...wasted!

//* Lunch time *//

I am sitting here thinking about where to go for lunch...alone. If I come out from my meetings early, I will have lunch with my lunch buddies - Trevor, Alex, Suhedi and Abdul. Usually, we will either take the shuttle bus to NUS canteens (and get to feast our eyes on young university girls) or go to Cintech I. But today, I'm late and they have gone off without me. *sigh* Another trip to the hub, Science Hub, that is.
It's Wednesday. Have had to work late at home last night on a flowchart for today's meeting. I did not feel the drain until when I try to wake up just now and realised I didn't sleep well. Read in the Chinese papers this morning that a local theatre group is staging a play based on µÚÒ»´ÎÇ×ÃܽӴ¥, an ebook I have read that left quite an impression. It's a touching love story of a couple who met on the net. If you have a Palm and can read Chinese on it, you can download the ebook here.

//* Life goes on... *//

Yep, you guessed it - I'm not among the nine who shared the $12 million Toto top prize. And so, life goes on...what to do?

//* Going down memory lane... *//

This is a picture taken about 3 years' back in Melbourne. I am nearest to the camera on the right. With me are Rohan, BL and Ken, past and present colleagues who, like me, was sent there to help start the company's operations down under. I have yet to go anywhere that far for a vacation, but in the years just before the tech downturn, I have made working trips to Melbourne, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Manila and Seoul. For a boy-who-have-not-seen-the-world like me, it was godsend and it remains the highlight of my career thus far.
//* Loveless... *//

I have always been timid and shy. During my teens, I spent 4 years in a boys' school and then 2 years in junior college, and all I ever did in that time was study. No girlfriends and not much fun. After that, it was 30 tough months of National Service before I went to NUS. Again it was mostly just lectures, tutorials and projects at the university. I had some crushes from time to time but no real romance. You can guess that I probably don't have what it takes in the looks department. Worse, I didn't have the guts. In the years after graduation, I had my one and only relationship to date. I fall for her in 1996 but she went with another guy for about 3 years before we started off sometime in late 2000. My time with her lasted barely 5 months before she decided to call it quits. Maybe she has never loved me at all, but I will always remember those happy times. It has been more than a year since and the wounds has long healed. I am, however, still looking for that special someone to love and protect. Could you be the one?

//* Good buy... *//

I just bought a 5-in-1 memory card reader. It can read CF, SD, MMC, Smart Media and IBM Microdrive. Got it for $68 at Funan. I was contemplating to get the Canon's AC adaptor kit, but in the only one shop I could find that carries it, it is going for something like $110. Getting a memory card reader makes more sense since I can also use it to work with my Palm's SD card, and any other memory cards I will buy in the future. So now I am happily viewing the pictures taken at Hatta's housewarming off the card reader. Cool!

//* Dreaming... *//

Today is Hari Raya Haji, and today I bought the very first Toto ticket in my life - a total of 6 sets of Quick Pick System 7 for $21 for the Hongbao Draw 2002. The top prize money for Monday's draw is a whooping $12 million!!! Yes, $12 million!!! Who can resist the temptation to have a shot at such good money? But it's just a dream, one of thousands others in Singapore, that the lucky stars shine on me on Monday. Let beginner's luck rule!
//* At the office... *//

At the office : Jon is still working to get the Phoenix bill run going so that we can run it through the weekend and have some results to show to boss when she comes back from vacation on Tuesday. We started this project to build a new system two months short of one year ago. We are close to bearing fruits now and the fruits will be sweet, very sweet.
Added a link to BrownTown that offers amusing views of news and happenings in Singapore, and also a link to SG! Blogs. In fact, I have fill out the form to get this blog listed there. Maybe then it would be pretty soon that I won't be the only one reading Journey of My Thoughts. I also added a Google search facility here - it's a fantastic search engine. If however the Google logo you see has a partial white background, please bear with it temporarily. I will get it fixed real quick.

Received letter from HR this afternoon - I have been given a small little salary increment and a grade promotion. I am not exactly boosted by it, but I cannot be disappointed. Many others elsewhere are getting pay cuts or facing retrenchment or are already jobless. To be able to get a raise in the current economic climate is very enviable. I cannot be asking for more than the good fortune that I have been blessed with.
Thinking about what to post today, I spent some time looking at other peoples' blogs. I think it will be a while before I am really able to journal what I think spontaneously. I am still too cautious with whatever I am posting, going them over and again to make sure that it sounds right and that it doesn't give away what I don't want others to know. I am still not able to say naturally what I really feel. But I'll get there.

Downloaded Stephen Hawking's A Brief History Of Time into my Palm. I actually bought the book many many years back but have never gone past the first two chapters, primarily because the material became too difficult for me to digest beyond that. I'm trying again. So, wish me wisdom to finish it this time.

Rushed home from office just to catch Bai Wan Da Ying Jia. For those who are not familiar, this is the Chinese version of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire shown on Singapore TV. There's an English version that has just ended its run. This is the beginning of the Chinese version's second season which starts off with some celebrities participating in the game show and raising money for charity. But the celebrities, including some from Taiwan, did not do very well in today's show. Most of them only won $1000 each, albeit for charity. Tomorrow, the real participants will be playing. You can bet I will be rushing home again tomorrow night.

Monday, February 18, 2002

I bought a Canon A10 digital camera yesterday on a little impulse and then registered an account at Homex. One of the first pictures I took with the camera is the corner of my room. The picture looks good, right? I am going to bring the camera to work today to snap a few pictures and also to Hatta's place on Hari Raya Haji this Saturday. So you can expect that I will be putting up many photos in the days to come. Oops...it's 8.30am already...better end here...late for work liao!

Sunday, February 17, 2002

My parents are going to Sentosa with 'small aunt', Father's youngest sister. Admission is $7 per person by bus, but the admission to Underwater World is $17! Still remember the last time I went Sentosa, I was with Steve and his friends and spent a lazy afternoon by the beach at Sunset Bay ogling at sweet young girls in bikinis. I recall saying to myself then that I will go back there again sometime. If you want to know where Sunset Bay is on Sentosa, look at this map.
I'm on leave today! It is the end of the Chinese New Year holiday period and many people are filing back to the office. I should see some fresh faces at work tomorrow. Sharon called early in the morning to arrange for a meeting tomorrow afternoon. Hmm...there's no escape from work even if I'm on leave.
This is my first and only blog, the creation of which is inspired by another : little bee's somekind-of-wonderful. If you are reading this, little bee, thanks for creating such a lovely blog! I like it so much that I decided to do one for myself.

A touching South Korean music video. The file is about 17.6 MB.
Finally spent some time customizing the template. It's the beginning of Journey of My Thoughts. Going to create a column to the left to put all the links. Stay tuned.

It's Valentine's day, and on this day in the year 2002, this site is born.
